What is ADSL?
ADSL stands for asymmetrical digital subscriber line or loop. It is delivered by your standard telephone line. ADSL needs to be activated on the physical phone line so your ADSL connection will only work where the phone line is connected.

How can I be on the phone and internet at the same time?
ADSL uses a different frequency than your voice service, so the 2 can operate at the same time. Sometimes you could hear some static or noise on your telephone, which is why you put filters on the phones, to screen out the digital signal.

In general terms your voice or fax service is un - affected by ADSL.

When do I require a central splitter?
A central splitter is required if the telephone line you put the ADSL service on goes into a PBX (telephone system eg: commander) or if the line has a back to base alarm. An Austel registered technician is required to do this. If possible try and put the ADSL on a line without these devices on it. As mentioned before ADSL does not affect your voice or fax service so having it on your main phone number is ok.

If you have more than 5 telephone extensions on the line you may also require a central splitter.

How fast is ADSL?
ADSL is capable of download speeds of 8Meg and upload speeds of 1Meg. In Australia most providers rely on the Telstra network which limits speed to a maximum of 1.5Meg downstream and 256Kb upstream.

What is the Yak billing cycle?
You are billed monthly in advance from the 1st of each month; this is when the usage meters are reset to zero. Payment can be made either by credit card or direct debit. If you wish to pay by cash or cheque, you are required to pay three monthly in advance. Excess data charges are billed monthly in arrears.

Can I share my ADSL connection?
Yes! You are welcome to share the connection on your local area network.

Can I run mail or web servers?
There is no restriction on this although the ADSL service is not designed for this so performance may variable.
